Galen Rupp of Oregon set himself up splendidly for later this year and next when he won the featured 10,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday night in the fastest time by an American-born collegian in 27 minutes, 33.48 seconds.

Among college students, only Kenyan-born Henry Rono and Samson Kimobwa of Washington State in the late 1970s ran faster than Rupp, a junior at Oregon. Rupp's time at Stanford's Cobb Track & Angell Field also earned him the "A'' qualifying standards for the 2007 World Championships and the 2008 Olympic Games.

"I'm stoked,'' Rupp said after holding off David Galvan of Mexico (27:33.96) for the win. "I was just trying to get the 'A' standard. It was the first time I've rested all year. I felt good. My parents are here. It's the first time they've seen me run outside of Oregon. I'm happy for that.''

Also happy was Oregon coach Vin Lananna, the former head of Stanford's track and field program. Both coach and runner will be happier still if Rupp finishes in the top three to make the U.S team at next year's Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., where the soon-to-be 21-year-old will receive unprecedented fan support.

"It's a dream come true to have the trials in Eugene,'' Rupp said. "It's going to be rocking.''
